My husband and I have been married nearly 3 years. He has a 10 year-old son from a previous relationship; I have an 8 year-old daughter from a previous marriage. We fly my stepson once a month across the country to spend a long weekend with us, and he spends 1 1/2 months with us in the summer.
I have done everything in my power to make this little boy comfortable. He has his own bedroom, decorated the way he likes, I buy him clothes, comic books, sign him up for summer camp, make his meals, take him to interesting places-- all the same things I do for my daughter. The problem is he is sullen, cruel, and distant to everyone in the family when he visits. My husband makes many excuses for him because he lives so far away ( he has always lived so far away) and his is integrating into a new family. After three years, though I don't see too much of a change, and my daughter has given up trying to befriend her new sibling. Any thoughts or ideas?

Re: Stepson doesn't want to be part of the family
Sat, June 3, 2006 - 8:29 PMIs he even like this during the summer time? It takes at least three days for our family to really reconnect with sd when she visits once every month or two but when we have her for a week after about four days things are good with us. She did used to live with us part-time though so that's probably helped.
